A First Devlog


Intro

Hi. I am working on a small game where the current workingtitle is SpaceBoom.  Its likely going to be a 2D topdown shooterwith pixel graphics. I have around 3 years corporate developing experience and this is gonna be my first game and here i would like to document a bit of the process.

 

What happened so far?

I started developing about a year ago. Progress is not regular as i have to work at the same time as wellbut  basically started with developing a small prototype with kaboomjs. A small js library that is still in development and is mainly geared at starting quick and develop small platformers. I challenged myself to develop a full releaseable game pretty quickly as i fell in love with game developing pretty fast and hard. Since then i have been developing this game and in the meantime ported it to electron so that i can release it as a standalone version on steam aswell. Since then I have added feature by feature and the codebase has been growing steadily.

The state currently is that I’m almost finished with the games base mechanics and i can soon start to develop the actual games challenges for the player.

Development Challenges

My challenges to come are going to be mainly creating and developing the art as I have little no experience in creating art.  Furthermore  adding QOL changes to the player (menu entry to exit game (lol),indiciations to player being hurt etc), adding basic functionality for the player weapon upgrades and animations that beautify the experience for the player will be further challenges.

After all these fixes have been done I can finally focus on level design and creating an engaging world for the players.

Goals

Game focused to create as much fun for the player for a low price point instead of pay2win mechanics or lootcrate mechanics that prey on peoples walltes only.

Mainly the game mechanics should be engaging and it should feel good to play/maneuver the character and interesting enemy behaviour and puzzles should make the game interesting for to the player.

Personal goals

Personally the goal for me is also trying out new tech and finally release my first game. Im getting really giddy at the thought of one day releasing my game and people actually playing it and enjoying what I created with my hard work and time I dedicated to this project.

 

Tech

I will talk more about the technological challenges I faced so far with implementing with this electron/kaboomjs stack in a coming blog íf that would be requested by anybody.

What i'm really looking for right now

Direction for level Design/Game Design Game mechanics. Currently my main idea is to add more bosses with unique attack and shooting patterns but im really happy for input on anything that could make the game more interesting.

 Testing. People willing to test what little is there yet and tell me how it feels so far.

And .... a random amazing artist with nothing to do and no monetary demands or is ready to team up or help out. Actually really any help is appreciated.
